Mark and Lisa marry in Sri Lanka

Mark Titherly and Lisa Harris were married at the Mount Lavinia hotel, near Colombo, Sri Lanka on 20th November, 2001.

Mark, eldest son of David and Tricia, used to live in Dorking, Surrey. Lisa is the second daughter of Chris and Pauline and comes from Redhill, Surrey.

The couple met at college in Reigate. They now live in Eastbourne where they have bought a house near the seafront.

Despite temperatures of 32 degrees, the couple were dressed in traditional British wedding dress and suit. They met in the lobby of the hotel, where Lisa received her bouquet and was presented to Mark by her father, Chris. Outside the hotel they were greeted by the wedding elephant. They were then led by seven Kandian dancers and drummers to the place on the beach they had chosen for the wedding ceremony.

In addition to the exchange of vows and signing the register (in Sinhalese!) the ceremony included local customs such as tying one little finger of each of the couple and lighting symbolic oil burners.

High tea was provided on the beach for the couple and guests, after which the new Mr and Mrs Titherly rode from the beach on a ceremonial elephant.

The bride's parents provided evening dinner on the beach for all guests, after which the couple spent the night in the Governor's VIP suite at the hotel.

The couple were in Sri Lanka for a total of two weeks. Following the wedding they went to the Maldives for a honeymoon, returning to host an evening reception for invited family and friends in Eastbourne on December 8th, 2001.
